  • This is the mathematical foundation of operation on information such as source coding, channel coding, and communication. This field was established after the pioneering work by Claude Shannon - his masterpiece, A Mathematical Theory of Communication (1948), one of the most influential works in the history of communications. In this work, Shannon characterized the fundamental limit for reliable communication over a point-to-point communication channel, the so-called channel capacity, and provided the architectural system design for achieving it. The topics covered include necessary mathematical definitions, theorems, and tools to prove Shannon's channel capacity formulae.
  • Prerequisite: MATH 526 (old EECS 461) or an equivalent undergraduate probability course.

EECS 800: Inference and Learning
