This project examines the behavior of the Adaptive Broadband Ltd. (ABL) Radio ATM (RATM) system in the wireless local loop (WLL) environment. This study focuses on the following aspects of the system: characteristics and behavior of the media access layer, MAC behavior under various channel and interference conditions, and use of mobility-support features and measurement-based adaptation.
Such an understanding of the system might be used, for example, to determine throughput versus range characteristics, or to support modem and antenna design efforts or capacity and access point location planning.
Our method is to characterize system behavior through modeling, and correlate these models with measurements of the RATM system. We will model various layers of the system and its environment in order to explore the performance envelope.
Within these models, we will vary selected characteristics of the system, such as frequency, antenna configurations, transmitted power, modulation schemes, bit rates, and media access layer behavior. We will also vary a number of environmental variables to characterize the behavior of the system in the outdoor environment, such as distance between transmitter and receiver, transmission path conditions, and weather conditions. We will coordinate with the RATM designers to specify in detail the range of variables for each of these system and environmental characteristics. Measurements will be collected as necessary to verify the correctness of the models.
Additional models, measurements and conditions of interest to Adaptive Broadband Ltd. and KU may be pursued as appropriate.
These studies of the RATM systems will be correlated to provide an understanding of the higher layer system behavior.
