We are seeking a motivated graduate-level computer science student to help with the development and implementation of a visual data mining environment for glycomics data exploration, with the opportunity to extend this work as a Master thesis topic.
The idea of this work is to develop a web-based data integration and a data mining environment to facilitate the exploration of glycomics data. The systems should also enable different laboratories to share glycomics and oligosaccharide mass spectrometry data. The system needs to be developed as an entire data integration platform. It should provide a stable architecture and friendly user interfaces developed using Java Server Faces (JSF), Java Beans and Java Swings. The database will be developed in Postgres on a Linux platform. The work will also include data migration from different platforms as we all develop plug-ins to visualize 3D structures using tools like JMol for the glycomics data.
Successful applicants should be interested in Bioinformatics. The desire to pursue a Master thesis within the proposed framework will be considered a plus. The student should be comfortable in a Linux environment, and must have good programming skills in Java, JSF, Java Beans. Experience with database administration (ideally using Postgres) and XML are also required.
The position will entail part time employment (20 hrs / week) commencing sometime between mid-December and early January, and running for four months with possibilities for extension. Expected salary is in the range of $1500 / month, plus standard student benefits and a tuition allowance.
Interested applicants are asked to send CV and cover letter, or any relevant questions, to Mahesh Visvanathan.
