The overall goal of this project is to produce a commercial solar radiation modeling software package, HELIOS. Spatially based solar radiation models, which calculate incident solar radiation on complex surfaces, are in great demand in many application fields such as agriculture, meteorology, ecology, and climate change monitoring. A feasibility system has been developed by my laboratory. The system calculates the incoming solar radiation, taking into account sky obstructions, surface orientation (slope and aspect), and solar angle (azimuth and zenith). The system produces simulations that planners and scientists need to predict earth system processes such as energy balance, plant growth, and weather phenomena.
