Radar Sounding and Airborne High-Resolution Mapping of Near-Surface Layers of the Greenland Ice Sheet

The University of Kansas Radar Systems and Remote Sensing Laboratory will continue airborne radar depth sounder and wideband radar measurements of ice sheet thickness and snow accumulation rates, respectively.
We will expand the capabilities of the radar depth sounder by upgrading the radar to operate at three frequencies. This will significantly enhance its performance in collecting ice thickness data over outlet glaciers and transition zones.
During this project, extensive airborne surveys will be made with our wideband radar, providing high-resolution maps of near-surface internal layers to a depth of about 150 m in dry snow zones and to a depth of about 50 m in percolation and melt zones.
We will develop electromagnetic propagation models and model-based signal processing algorithms to interpret the internal layers identified by the wideband radar, and to estimate long-term accumulation rates over large areas of the Greenland ice sheet. We will improve the performance of the wideband accumulation radar incrementally over the three-year project period by upgrading its antenna to an array antenna.
We will process and distribute the depth sounder and wideband radar data in a timely manner to investigators selected through this NRA and to the wider scientific community. The anticipated results from this project are needed ice thickness data on outlet glaciers; wideband radar data that will be used to generate long-term accumulation maps for the Greenland ice sheet; and training and education of graduate students in engineering and glaciology.
