ITTC researchers will evaluate 100Gb/s or higher optical modulation techniques likely to be most suited to the Sprint optical fiber network. Along with evaluation, researchers will develop improved measurement devices capable of measuring multiple fiber impairments that degrade optical operational margins at higher speeds and capable of making the measurements non-intrusively on traffic-carrying systems. Achievement of these objectives will further a strategic goal of closer integration of IP systems and optical DWDM transmission systems, more efficient optical network traffic support, and improvements in the network cost structure. ITTC researchers developed systems for measuring Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) in the existing Sprint fiber network without interrupting existing traffic.
